As I’ve been running a successful coaching practice for 15 years and was one of the first in Australia to become accredited with the international Coaching Federation (ICF), I often get inquiries from people interested in becoming a coach or in coach mentoring. I have also trained coaches who wanted to run their own business and others in the corporate sector who wanted to add coaching to their skill set.
Becoming a coach is quite a journey and can be a very rewarding one. For others though what they thought was a good idea never actually eventuated, for some of the reasons I state below.
When someone makes an inquiry the first question I ask them is ‘Have you experienced coaching yourself?’ If not, then I suggest the first step they need to take is to experience coaching firsthand. Some of those people replied that they didn’t ‘need’ coaching they just wanted to be a coach. This indicated to me that they actually had no idea about the coaching methodology or benefits and probably would not make good coaches.
For those who wanted to know more, I did a complimentary coaching session with (this is the way we many of us market our services). A complimentary session is actually a two way evaluation. Firstly the potential client is evaluating the personal benefit of coaching for themselves, the relevance of the program and their compatibility with the coach. The coach is also evaluating the suitability of the potential client; are they the sort of person I can work with. Another coach or methodology might be more suitable.
Of those who went ahead and did the #DareToBeYourBest program, some realised coaching wasn’t really the direction they wanted to go. This was a good outcome as they did become clear about what they were really passionate about. They then became engaged with that and hadn’t wasted time and money going down the coach training path. They walked away with a 1, 5, 10 year plan in 10 different areas of life including career.
The rest realised coaching was the path they should explore. After taking them through the #DareToBeYourBest program they were clearer why they wanted to enter the coaching profession, who would be their possible niche market, explored accredited training options etc. Before people invest $1000’s and time in coach training it’s good to get clarity about these things as it helps choosing the appropriate training.
So you see, this process was a win for them all
