An expectation is a strong belief that something will come your way. It’s very different to just wishing or hoping.
How important are our expectations in determining what happens to us in life?
Albert Einstein said. ‘Your imagination is the preview of the coming events in your life.’
It doesn’t take a great deal of observation to notice that people who expect the best in life usually seem to happier and life runs smoother. And have you noticed that the reverse also seems to be true? Those who expect the worst seem to get it.
Is this a coincidence, luck or is something else going on?
While you may not always get what you want, you will always get what you expect!
The power of belief and expectation work just as effectively on your feelings of failure, self-doubt and limitation as they do on your thoughts of self-belief, success and achievement.
It’s a basic principle I observe everyday as a professional coach; we move toward and become what we think about most of the time. Our predominant mental attitude. People sometimes come to me with a cloudy future or no particular direction. During the time I work with them we begin to see possibilities instead of obstacles. There is a change in mindset and then that filters through to their circumstances. A new energy begins to operate in their lives; it’s one of expectation, then things begin to show up.
What are your expectations for yourself?
- Do you expect to do the things you dream about or do you expect obstacles, opposition and eventual disappointment?
- What do you expect in life, your career, the type of relationship you’ll have?
These thoughts are creating your present and your future. That’s why its so important for us to be aware or conscious of our inner conversations. Most thinking is habitual and a new way of thinking can be learned with a little discipline.
It’s a timeless principle ‘What you’ll expect, you’ll get’
“Don’t lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.” Ralph Marston
