In this well written autobiography, Anthony Venn-Brown takes the reader on a remarkable journey from his life inside the Church, married with two children, to the highs and lows of gay life. It is a heart felt story of someone attempting to reconcile two disparate, but equally powerful, elements of his life - a passionate man of god who passionately loved men. A loving father and husband whose sexuality would not be accepted by his Church and who was cast out by his fellow Christians.
Anthony wonderfully invokes growing up in Sydney in the nineteen fifties and his prose really rings true for a first time author. His life passage parallels the sexual awakenings of gay Australia and although the points on his geographical compass are probably more extreme than most, there is much to identify with here. As our exploration of who we truly are always effects those closest to us, and it is their pain that echoes through this book. Through it all, however, we come to see the essential nature of 'character', despite the dramatic changes of scenery along the way.
